The city government of Marikina, through the City Health Office (CHO), joins the nationwide celebration of Nutrition Month this July with an array of activities.
With this year’s theme, “Sa wastong nutrisyon ni mommy, siguradong healthy si baby,” the event focuses on promoting the nutritional well-being of women prior to, during, and after pregnancy.
Mayor Marides Fernando said Nutrition Month gives citizens an opportunity to become “catalysts for concerted action for nutrition improvement.”
“Pregnant women, in particular, play a pivotal role in ensuring the good health of their babies. By taking care of themselves, eating only nutritious food, and practicing a healthy lifestyle, these mothers-to-be pave the way for delivering bright, healthy babies,” she added.
The Nutrition Month celebration will be highlighted by a Seach for Gandang Buntis on July 18 at the Riverbanks Center. The competition aims to select mothers-to-be who epitomize healthy pregnancy. Complementary activities such as mini symposium, dance exercise, and touch therapy session for infants will also be held.
Other activities slated to be conducted during the monthlong observance are seminars, cooking demonstration, deworming session in public elementary schools, and quiz bee to be participated in by barangay nutrition scholars.
Meanwhile, CHO regularly conducts “Pabasa sa Nutrisyon” in Marikina’s 16 health centers as part of its healthy meals advocacy. Through lectures and reading sessions, mother-attendees learn about the value of preparing nutritious food in advancing the physical and mental sustenance of their families.
Likewise, Marikina supports Nestlé’s healthy breakfast drive that promotes breakfast as the most important meal of the day.
