Six Taiwanese investors from the footwear industry visited the country for a trade mission last May 10 to 14. The delegation, composed of several officers of the Taiwan Footwear Manufacturers Association, namely its President, Mr. Lin Chao Chieh; secretary general, Mr. Kung Fan Zion; secretary, Ms. Huang Pei Fang and its members, Mr. Lee Chin Shan, Mr. Yeh Chao Ming and Mr. Hsiao Yu Hsien heeded the invitation of Chairman Tomas Alcantara of the Manila Economic and Cultural Office (MECO), Undersecretary Lilia de Lima of the Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) and President Lolito Lopez of the Philippine Footwear Federation Inc. (PFFI) and checked the viability of moving their manufacturing plants from the Peoples Republic of China to the Philippines.
With the growing labor cost and stricter policies in China, the Taiwanese footwear manufacturers are seriously looking at other Asian countries to relocate several of their factories.
Since Marikina is renowned as the Shoe Capital of the Philippines, the investors spent a day touring the city -- looking at shoe factories, scouting for properties that they could lease and even business partners that they could venture with.
The honorable Mayor Marides Carlos Fernando, several city government officials and members of the business community – officers of Marikina Filipino Chinese Chamber headed by its President Benito Ong, Marikina Bankers Association(MBA) headed by President Francisco “Kiko” Benito, Marikina Valley Chamber Commerce & Industry (MVCCI)headed by its Past President Ed “ECF” C. Francisco together with PFFI composed of its President Lito Lopez, directors Roger Py, Andy Cheng, William Castro and Henry Uy hosted a luncheon meeting in honor of the Taiwan delegation. The investors were briefed by the Mayor about the prospects of setting up a business in the city, enumerating Marikina’s competitive edge.
The entire delegation left the country on a positive note, vowing to come back soon to formalize business deals. Charmed by the warm reception that they got and impressed with the city’s track record of being efficient and business friendly, the Taiwanese investors have shown keen interest making Marikina the future home of their shoe business. |
